Serena Williams isn’t letting one dance get in the way of her feelings about Drake.
Back in February, the 23 time Grand Slam champion made waves when she briefly joined Kendrick Lamar during “Not Like Us”—a diss track aimed at Drake—at the Super Bowl Halftime show. But as for whether she as taking aim at the “One Dance” rapper, whom she dated in 2014, with her surprise appearance?
“Absolutely not,” Serena, 41, said inside of Time’s 100 Most Influential People issue published April 15. “I would never do that. And that was sad, that anyone would ever think that. I respect how they could.”
Still, she understands why people saw it as such.
“Obviously I can see how someone would think that,” Serena, who wed Alexis Ohanian in 2017, continued. “But absolutely not. I have never had negative feelings towards him. We’ve known him for so many years.”
With all the chatter surrounding Serena’s moment on stage, where she alongside Kendrick paid homage to their hometown of Compton, California, with the Crip Walk, the 43-year-old admits she doesn’t know how to feel about doing the controversial dance in the moment.
“I don’t know if I regret it or not,” Serena—mom to Olympia, 7, and Adira, 18 months—said. “I don’t know the answer to that.”
Indeed, one of the most vocal critics of her cameo was Stephen A. Smith, who declared on his First Take podcast that he would divorce is wife if she participated in such a performance, adding, “clearly you don’t belong with me.”
However, Serena laughed the moment off, especially as her husband Alexis, whose opinion she values most, offered his wife of seven years a glowing review.
“I thought it was hilarious,” Serena told Time of his reaction. “He’s allowed to have his personal opinion. But did you see my husband’s remark? It was so eloquent.”
Plus, she and the Reddit co-founder are too busy making their mark in other meaningful ways, including an ownership stake in Angel City FC.
“And I’m like, dude, like, we literally are investing in the world, both of us,” Serena continued “We’re investing in women and in sports. This is literally the last thing on our minds. Come on.”
