Sink Your Teeth Into Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer’s Epic Romance

Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer‘s engagement didn’t last a thousand years, but it took a minute before the pair followed through with their long-gestating plan to tie that knot.

“I want it to be pretty chill,” Stewart said on The Howard Stern Show in November 2021. “I don’t want anyone walking anyone down any aisles. We’re just going to, like, stand and do vows and f–king party after. It’s kind of just a great excuse to get together and say ‘I love you’ in front of all your friends.”

And that’s ultimately what transpired, the pair who turned out to be exactly right for each other swapping vows April 20 at a Mexican restaurant near the Los Angeles house Meyer helped turn into a home.

Not least because she basically stopped Stewart from living like an actual vampire.

“When she moved into this house,” the Twilight alum told Rolling Stone in 2024, “I had no curtains, three forks, and I never drank coffee, and I was like, ‘I don’t sleep.’ She’s like, ‘In the morning you drink coffee and you work, and you’re alive, and you’re awake, and then at night you close the curtains.’ In retrospect, it was so obvious.”

And Meyer ultimately helped her see the light in a variety of important ways.

When Stewart, 35, first met Meyer in 2014 on the set of American Ultra, there was instant chemistry, the actress recalled, “in a way where you aren’t sure if you want to f–k or be like, ‘Dude, let’s think of a handshake.'”

But Stewart was admittedly not ready to deal, having just put the five-film Twilight Saga to bed with the release of Breaking Dawn: Part 2 in November 2012.

She was also still entangled in the hysteria that accompanied her onscreen-turned-real-life romance with costar Robert Pattinson, which endured off and on until May 2013. And it wasn’t until she was publicly dating women that she was even remotely comfortable discussing her love life.

Mind you, that comfort was still pretty remote, but it was apparent that Stewart was in a much better place.

“When I was dating a guy I was hiding everything that I did because everything personal felt like it was immediately trivialized, so I didn’t like it,” she told Elle UK in 2016. “We were turned into these characters and placed into this ridiculous comic book, and I was like, ‘That’s mine. You’re making my relationship something that it’s not.’ I didn’t like that.”

And once she was with a woman, “I was like, ‘Actually, to hide this provides the implication that I’m not down with it or I’m ashamed of it, so I had to alter how I approached being in public,'” Stewart reflected. “It opened my life up and I’m so much happier.'”

Moreover, she added, “I think also right now I’m just really in love with my girlfriend. We’ve broken up a couple of times and gotten back together, and this time I was like, ‘Finally, I can feel again.'”

At the time she was in a relationship with visual effects producer Alicia Cargile (and during one of their breakups, the César winner notably spent some time with the French singer Stéphanie “Soko” Sokolinski).

Stewart and Cargile weren’t together for much longer after that interview was published—and in 2017 she told Harper’s Bazaar UK that she was “definitely” open to dating a man again, quipping that she wasn’t the type to eat grilled cheese every day for the rest of her life just because she liked one sandwich.

“I want to try everything,” the famously label-eschewing star explained. “If I have grilled cheese once I’m like, ‘That was cool, what’s next?'”

But there was nothing flippant about her approach to romance.

To anyone who thought she wasn’t really involved with Pattinson because she later came out as gay, Stewart offered, “I’ve been deeply in love with everyone I’ve dated. Did you think I was faking it? I’ve always really embraced a duality. And really, truly, believed in it and never felt confused or struggling. I just didn’t like getting made fun of.”

She had said that she was “like, so gay” in a March 2017 Saturday Night Live monologue, more as an affront to then-45th President Donald Trump—who had once encouraged Pattinson over Twitter to not take Stewart back—than as a social statement.

Stewart told E! News afterward that she was mainly in it for the timing of the joke—”Honestly, I think it was just funny”—but she soon realized it was an important moment for her fans.

“It wasn’t like, ‘Let’s do this thing that’s going to be so important,'” Stewart said. But also, “Yeah, I’m so utterly proud that I’ve had so many people be like, ‘Thank you,’ and I’m like, ‘No, thank you.’ It’s kind of mutual, full circle.”

All of which paved the way for her to be ready to meet Meyer (again) when they reconnected at a mutual friend’s birthday party in 2019, after Stewart had split up with model Stella Maxwell.

“I did get really lucky to re-meet someone that I was like—I was so ill-equipped, and now I am, like, going to make this happen,” Stewart told Drew Barrymore in March 2024.

As it turned out, Meyer had emailed Stewart multiple times in the ensuing years, trying to get in touch, but the actress never saw them.

“It was my fault for sure,” she told Rolling Stone. “But then I very much made this happen. I was intense, because I was just positive.”

When she relaid eyes on Meyer at the party, Stewart said on The Howard Stern Show in November 2019, “I was like, ‘Where have you been and how have I not known you?'”

After that, “all bets were off,” she continued, and two weeks later she was professing her love to the Moxie screenwriter.

Whirlwind Romances That Worked Out

“It was, like, really late and we were in some s–ty bar,” Stewart recalled. “And her friends were there or whatever, and they, like, walked out, and I was just like, ‘Oh man, I’m so f–king in love with you.’ Done.”

She explained, “When you know, you know…There is nothing like feeling sure about anything, because we don’t know anything. And that is the only thing you can feel like you know, is that if you’re in love with someone.”

Stewart also, incidentally, said she couldn’t “f–king wait” to propose to Meyer, noting, “I think good things happen fast.”

That they do, but it was Meyer who ended up popping the question, as Stewart revealed to Howard Stern when she returned to his studio two years later.

“We’re marrying, we’re totally gonna do it,” the Spencer star said in November 2021. “I wanted to be proposed to, so I think I very distinctly carved out what I wanted and she nailed it. We’re marrying, it’s happening.”

Not for at least a year, though, Stewart added, explaining that she didn’t want COVID-19 protocol to play any role at all on her and Meyer’s big day.

“The food is the biggest deal,” she said, detailing their vision. “I don’t care about flowers and s–t like that. The food needs to be on point.”

And though she’s a longtime Chanel ambassador, “I want to wear the best pair of Levi’s ever and, like, an old T-shirt that has a tuxedo printed on it, but like cut-off and barefoot,” Stewart continued. “I want to get married in, like, Topanga. I want to be chilling. I want it to be very homey. I want to see her laugh hysterically when she sees me in, like, a faux tuxedo T-shirt.”

So Stewart always envisioned tying the knot in L.A., where she and Meyer both grew up.

“We’re both, like, really casual people,” Stewart said on a March 2024 episode of the Not Skinny but Not Fat podcast. “And so we did this sweeping traditional thing where we were like, ‘Marry me.’ ‘You marry me.’ And then we just never, like, planned a wedding because we were like, ‘We kind of did it.’ But we’ll do it. I think we have a very loose plan, which is appropriate to us.”

But while the wedding planning was casual, they seriously started a business, forming production company Nevermind Pictures with Meyer’s BFF (and former roommate before she moved in with Stewart in 2021) Maggie McLean.

Nevermind’s first project was The Chronology of Water, directed by Stewart in Latvia last summer, and Meyer will be making her feature directorial debut with The Wrong Girls, which she also wrote, starring Stewart and Seth Rogan. “Took 13 years to get here but this is in fact the coolest day of my freakin’ life,” Meyer, 37, captioned her Instagram post sharing the Feb. 19 announcement.

While Stewart does have a private Instagram, Meyer is the only one publicly showing the occasional highlight of their life together, which in addition to their moviemaking venture involves a tight-knit circle of friends, a dog, a cat—”Happy valentines to my #1 crush, the hottest cat mom in the game. I am just so, so into you,” Meyer wrote to Stewart in 2024—and all sorts of good times playing pool, traveling and making art.

Addressing their leisurely engagement, Stewart told Rolling Stone last year, “We just are busy trying to make movies because they’re our babies.”

As for baby-babies, Stewart said, “I don’t know what my family’s going to look like, but there’s no f–king way that I don’t start acquiring kids. And also, ideally at some point soon I go, ‘I want to have a kid.’ I really want that to happen.”

She and Meyer had “done really annoying things like freeze our eggs and stuff,” Stewart said on Not Skinny but Not Fat. “So, like, if we want to we can. Keeping that open.”

And they’ve got their movie babies to focus on in the meantime.

In the past, Stewart’s creative intensity—no matter how shared with a partner—wasn’t “great for having relationships.”

But she and Meyer “don’t have that separation,” she told Rolling Stone. “I found the right person because I can be so obsessive about what I do. And luckily my girlfriend, my partner, we are into the same s–t. We have taken the things that we’re spending our time on and interlocked them, and we’re so much f–king smarter and stronger together. And you’re just like, ‘F–k, that is the best.'”

Years in the Making

While they were first linked publicly around August 2019, Kristen Stewart revealed to Howard Stern the following November that she had actually met Dylan Meyer six years earlier on a movie. However, their paths did not cross again until they reunited at a friend’s birthday party. As she recalled to Stern, “I was like, ‘Where have you been and how have I not known you?'”

“The first time I told her that I loved her,” Stewart recalled to Stern, “it was like really late and we were in some sh–ty bar and her friends were there or whatever, and they like walked out, and I was just like, ‘Oh man, I’m so f–king in love with you.’ Like, done.”

A Birthday Tribute

In April 2021, Meyer celebrated her other half’s 31st birthday with a sweet Instagram tribute. “Life sure is sweeter with this cute little family,” she captioned a photo of the actress and their dog. “Happy birthday, kiddo. You knock my socks off.”

Popping the Question

“We’re marrying. We’re totally going to do it,” Stewart confirmed to Stern in November 2021. “I kind of asked her. I wanted to be proposed to, so I think I very distinctly carved out my, what I wanted. And you know, she nailed it. It was really cute. She did very well. And we’re marrying. It’s happening.”

Wedding Bells

“I want it to be pretty chill,” Stewart told Stern of their future nuptials. “I don’t want anyone walking anyone down any aisles. We’re just going to like stand and do vows and f–king party after. It’s kind of just a great excuse to get together and say ‘I love you’ in front of all your friends.”

Planning Their Future

Stewart opened up about potentially starting a family with Meyer, sharing in a March 2024 episode of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast that the two have “done really annoying things like freeze our eggs and stuff.”

“So if we want to, we can,” the Love Lies Bleeding star shared. “Keeping that open.”

Newlyweds

Stewart and Meyer tied the knot in a small ceremony at Los Angeles’ Casita Del Campo Mexican restaurant on April 20, according to TMZ, who published photos from the wedding. Among those in attendance, per the outlet, were Ashley Benson and Brandon Davis.
