Sudiksha Konanki‘s family have made a heartbreaking request.
More than 10 days after the University of Pittsburgh student disappeared during a spring break trip to Punta Cana, her loved ones have asked police in the Dominican Republic to declare her dead, according to NBC News, citing a police spokesman Diego Pesqueira.
According to the outlet, Pesqueira said her family sent the Dominican Republic National Police a letter requesting the declaration of death.
Officials previously shared Mar. 9 they believed Konanki had died by drowning. Despite an extensive search by authorities, her body has not been found.
The 20-year-old was last seen early in the morning on Mar. 6 after going to the beach with friends. Konanki reportedly stayed behind with people she’d met on the trip after her friends went back to the hotel.
Since Konanki went missing, a senior from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota Joshua Riibe has been identified as likely the last person to have seen Konanki alive.
Riibe has been identified as a person of interest in the case by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, though not a suspect. While the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office doesn’t have jurisdiction in the Dominican Republic, the department—located in Konanki’s hometown—sent detectives to aid with the investigation.
Riibe, according to an interview transcript obtained by NBC News, told investigators he and Konanki had been standing in waist deep water when they were swept into the ocean by a large wave. He said they “tried to call for help, but there was no one there.”
“When I finally reached the ground on the beach, I pulled her in front of me,” the 22-year-old, who said he swam them both to the shore, told investigators. “She went to gather her belongings since the sea had moved us. She wasn’t out of the water, as it was up to our knees.”
Riibe recounted seeing Konanki walking at an angle in the water, and that he asked if she was okay but he’d begun vomiting seawater and missed any answer. He said when he’d recovered, he didn’t see Konanki but he thought she must have gathered her things and gone back to the hotel.
Since Konanki’s disappearance, Riibe has remained in the Dominican Republic—after having his passport confiscated, according to a statement shared with NBC News by his legal team—and has been aiding authorities in their investigation, with an NBC News reporter sharing he was on the beach with investigators Mar. 16.
According to the reporter, Riibe pointed toward the water alongside his attorney, investigators and security officials.
“I’m just trying to help them out,” he told the outlet while at the Riu República Resort, where he and Konanki had each been staying while on their trip. “The ocean is a dangerous place.”
