DC Studios is looking to score with audiences this Super Bowl Sunday. The Warner Bros. division unveiled a new look at Supergirl, it’s upcoming spinoff of last summer’s Superman.

The feature stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the Kryptonian cousin to Superman. The character appeared briefly in Superman in a memorable scene revealing she is the true owner of the dog Krypto, and has an affinity for partying off-world.

And in the new Supergirl trailer, Kara meets Krypto for the first time, as footage of her living on Krypton ahead of its demolition is also shown.

“This is really an anti-hero story. She’s got a lot of demons, a lot of baggage coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life,” director Craig Gillespie told a crowd at a previous trailer launch event last year. Added DC Studios co-head James Gunn: “So many times female superheroes are so perfect. She’s not that at all … Like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while.”

The cast also includes Jason Momoa as the fan favorite character Lobo, and Matthias Schoenaerts as the antagonist Krem of the Yellow Hills. Ana Nogueira penned the script for the project, which arrives June 26.

Supergirl is one of two movies due out from DC Studios this year. It also has Clayface, a horror-tinged movie that is also more modestly budgeted than a typical superhero blockbuster. It arrives Oct. 23. The studio will also unveil Lanterns, its HBO Max series that hits in the late summer.

This year’s Super Bowl is a contest between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots, and airs on NBC and streams on Peacock. Check out The Hollywood Reporter‘s Super Bowl coverage here.
