Take a (First) Look at NBC’s ‘Wicked’ Primetime Musical Special

This may be Wicked, but it’s certainly not “Something Bad.”

NBC has released the first photos from its Nov. 6 primetime musical special, Wicked: One Wonderful Night, which airs 15 days ahead of Universal Pictures’ Wicked: For Good release.

For two wonderful hours, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will sing and dance alongside their co-stars Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang and Marissa Bode. Director Jon M. Chu and the legendary stage musical’s composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz will also appear on the special, which includes “reimagined musical arrangements, cast interviews, behind-the-scenes moments, exclusive surprises and maybe even a sneak peek at what’s to come in the next chapter of Oz,” according to NBC.

I think we can rule out that the sneak peek is a “maybe.”

Wicked: One Wonderful Night has already been filmed at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, which for the one (wonderful) night was transformed into “a breathtaking Emerald City-inspired set, complete with a 37-piece live orchestra led by the award-winning musical director Stephen Oremus,” reads the Wednesday press release, which was accompanied by first-look photos. Wicked and Wicked: For Good choreographer Christopher Scott set up its dance numbers. Wicked: For Good features two new original songs by Schwartz.

Other “surprise guests” will join the Oz gang for Wicked: One Wonderful Night, which airs from 8-10 p.m. The TV special, produced by Fulwell Entertainment — Ben Winston and Raj Kapoor executive produce — will be available to stream on Peacock the following day.
