Davis Mallory is sharing an update on his journey.
The Challenge alum stated that he is no longer gay after recommitting to his Christian faith.
“I lived a gay lifestyle for about 20 years, I was on a television show The Real World and I came out as a gay Christian,” Davis, 42, said in a Sept. 14 Instagram video of him on stage speaking at the Arise House of Prayer and Worship in Hawaii. “But God really pulled me out of that lifestyle a year ago.”
Davis—who made his television debut and came out during his time on The Real World: Denver in 2007—shared with the crowd that he began having a series of dreams where he said God was prompting him to change his lifestyle.
“Yeah, praise God, praise God, honestly,” he said. “He started speaking to me in my dreams and showing me the spiritual warfare that I was going through. Every time I returned to sin I would have a nightmare that a car, my car was being broken into. I had a nightmare I gave my title to someone else. I was giving my identity to someone else while my car was sliding backwards.”
He continued, “So he was just showing me these really strong visual dreams, these images of what sin was doing in my life.”
Davis shared that after traveling to Hawaii and meeting a man who asked him if he had been baptized, he decided to take the next step—which led him to his current religious journey and inspired his song, “Baptized.”
After performing his song for the congregation, Davis continued to celebrate his faith journey and encouraged others to join him. In a follow-up statement posted on a since-expired Sept. 14 Instagram Story, Davis further elaborated on his decision.
“I feel like God gave me this vision that us being righteous and following the law is his perfect plan for us,” he wrote. “Sinning in anyway is not his plan for us and is not us honoring his design for how he made us. He did not design us to sin, and when we live a life of sin, we are not just dishonoring God, but we are doing a disservice to ourselves and our character.”
Davis previously spoke about his decision to come out as gay on The Real World, and how he worked as an advocate for gay people in the church.
“Immediately after The Real World, I spent time reading books on the subject of what the bible really says about homosexuality, as I was suddenly booked to speak on the subject at more than 40 universities around the US,” he told Out magazine in 2018. “At times, I even debated religious teachers on what the bible said and on whether you can be gay and a Christian. I fully believe you can.”
