Love Island USA has something for everyone: steamy romance, jaw-dropping drama and plenty of comedic gold.
While the islanders’ search for love has ensured there’s never a dull moment on the Peacock dating series, their often-questionable uses of the English language have proven to be just as entertaining to viewers.
Perhaps most notably, during an episode of the show’s seventh season earlier this month, Huda Mustafa accused her then-partner Jeremiah Brown of using her as a scapegoat for their relationship woes after going on a date with one of the bombshell arrivals.
“Because of the fact that he had a great date with Iris [Kendall], because of what we’re going through,” she shouted to her fellow contestants, “he’s using her as a f–king escape goat so that he can f–king stay in the game.”
The 24-year-old proceeded to misuse the idiom once again after Jeremiah, 25, chose Iris, 25, over her in a competition, chastising him for moving on from their romance.
“Enjoy it, your safe option,” she chided. “Your escape goat. Enjoy.”
Later, Amaya Espinal said she felt a mix of emotions after the other women voted to save her in an elimination ceremony, which resulted in Hannah Fields’ exit from the villa.
“I’m feeling sadness,” she said in a confessional interview during the June 22 episode, “and I’m also feeling a huge weight of gratitually.”
And the American contestants aren’t the only ones who get their expressions confused from time to time.
Besides Zachariah Noble’s infamous declaration that he wasn’t “trying to make a mountain out of a mole hole” during season 10 of Love Island U.K. in 2023, George Fensom appeared to accidentally channel Dua Lipa while courting fellow islander Molly Marsh on the same season.
“Typically on the outside,” he said, “I would levitate towards a girl like yourself.”
But the reality star later proved to have a sense of humor about the gaffe as he posted a TikTok video in June 2023 poking fun at his error. Alongside the clip, he wrote, “Lost the plot at this point.”
