TIME100: Gayle King Reveals What Oprah Winfrey Told Her After Blue Origin Space Flight

Oprah Winfrey’s support for Gayle King is truly out of this world.

The media mogul was visibly emotional during her longtime BFF’s ascent into space on the Blue Origin flight April 14, and she made her feelings known after the crew returned to Earth.

“She was so welled up,” Gayle, 70, exclusively told E! News at the TIME100 Gala in New York City April 24. “I know she said at one point [that] she was proud of me.” (For more from the event, tune into E! News tonight, April 24 at 11 p.m.)

But the CBS Mornings host was quick to clarify the reason for her longtime BFF’s tearful expression.

“When people saw her crying, people said, ‘Oh, she’s so worried. She thinks something’s gonna happen,’” Gayle continued. “That wasn’t it at all. She was crying because she knew what it took for me to do that, and so when I came [back] she was saying, ‘I’m so proud of you. You did that and I’m so proud of you.’”

After all, Oprah never doubted the all-female expedition, which also included the likes of Katy Perry and Lauren Sánchez.

“She always said I was gonna be OK,” Gayle added. “And Oprah knows things.”

Meanwhile, Gayle’s initial hesitation about the voyage was well-known—so much so, in fact, that her facial expression as she boarded the spacecraft spawned a viral internet meme.

“At that moment I was so afraid, I just wanted to get into my seat because I just wanted to let the training kick in,” she explained at a news conference after the short flight. “I just wanted to get inside the capsule and sit down, so the process of walking up there was a little daunting for me.”

But a little apprehension wasn’t enough to deter Gayle from blasting off.

“I knew that I was always going to do it,” she said during an Oprah Daily interview April 14. “Although, we were told, ‘If you’re going to back out, you have to do so before 2 minutes and 30 seconds. You have to say, ‘I’m not going to fly.’ But getting on, it was a little scary. So the memes show that I was apprehensive.”
