Val Kilmer’s cause of death has been confirmed.
The Top Gun actor, who passed away April 1 at age 65, died of pneumonia, according to a death certificate obtained by E! News.
Underlying causes that led to Val’s passing included acute hypoxemic respiratory failure and chronic respiratory failure, according to the outlet’s document. Squamous cell carcinoma, a cancer at the base of the tongue, was also listed as an underlying cause.
Additionally, the document listed significant conditions including malnutrition and tracheocutaneous fistula, a complication of the actor’s throat cancer treatment and tracheostomy.
Following Val’s passing, his body was cremated April 7 and his remains were released to his son, Jack Kilmer, 29, whom he shared with ex-wife Joanne Whalley.
Val’s daughter Mercedes Kilmer—whom he also shared with his ex—previously told the New York Times her father died of pneumonia when she confirmed his passing April 1.
In the days since the Batman star’s death, many of his friends and colleagues have honored his memory including Josh Gad, Jennifer Tilly and Tom Cruise.
“I’d like to honor a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer,” Tom told the audience at CinemaCon at Las Vegas April 3. “I can’t tell you how much I admire his work, how grateful and honored I was when he joined Top Gun and came back later for Top Gun: Maverick.”
The Mission: Impossible actor went on to lead the crowd in a moment of silence as a tribute to Val’s decades-long career.
“I think it would be really nice if we could have a moment together because he loved movies and he gave a lot to all of us,” Tom went on. “Just kind of think about all the wonderful times that we had with him.”
