After a photo of Joe Keery officiating a wedding in his Stranger Things character’s costume went viral, he is opening up about how that came to be.
While appearing on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, the actor confirmed that he did in fact wear his real Scoops Ahoy costume to officiate his friend’s wedding. However, he reiterated that wedding guests were actually all in costume.
“I was on tour earlier this year, and Matt and Veronica, who are in this picture, they’re getting married,” he said. “Veronica was like, ‘I think it’d be great. It’s a costume wedding. It’s Halloween. You should go as [Steve].’”
He also confirmed that “Amy Parris, who does costumes for the show, lent me the costume.”
Despite donning the look, he noted that he wasn’t the only one in costume at the wedding. “I mean, it looks like I just did this for two random people. These are my friends! There’s a bunch of people in costumes,” Keery emphasized.
Host Fallon then showed another photo from the wedding that showcased the different costumes guests wore including the Riddler and Shrek.
When reflecting on how iconic the costume has become, Keery quipped that while filming season three of the show, he tried to convince the Duffer Brothers to switch up the look.
“I kind of had thought, you know, we’re in the action, there’s Russians we’re fighting, we’re in an underground lair and stuff… shouldn’t I take off the blouse part?” Keery said. “Maybe the handkerchief? I could lose the handkerchief.”
He continued, “And the Duffer Brothers [said], ‘Oh, no, no, no — I think you should keep the whole thing. It’s a look. The whole thing is a look.’”
During season three, Steve got a job working at a local ice cream shop in the mall, which leads him to wear the Scoops Ahoy look. It’s there where he also meets Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke).
Despite having worn the costume for “a good year” at the time, Keery said this time around the costume fit differently. “It was a little tighter this time around, I gotta be honest with you,” he said. “The shorts didn’t fit quite the same.”
Keery reprises his Steve Harrington role in Stranger Things season four, which dropped its first four episodes on Wednesday. The remaining episodes of the final season will be released in two separate drops: The next volume releasing on Christmas Day, and the finale on New Year’s Day.
