Kate Hudson‘s love for Danny Fujikawa is like a fern—it needs room to grow.
That’s why the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days star isn’t rushing to head down the aisle with the musician despite being three years into their engagement. As she put it, “I like the concept of freedom.”
“I like the idea of being engaged forever,” Kate shared during the March 3 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, explaining that the “contractual” aspect of marriage is “tough for me.”
She continued, “I was raised by Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, who never signed the contract—and they’ve been ‘engaged’ since I was 7.”
Besides, Kate—who was married to The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson from 2000 to 2007 and was engaged to Muse rocker Matt Bellamy from 2011 to 2014—dreads having to figure out the logistics of a wedding.
“I just don’t have the same, ‘Oh, my god, I’m gonna get married and I can’t wait for the party,'” she said of her energy. “It’s the opposite. I’m like, ‘OK, I have to plan it and then it’s going to cost so much money.'”
The 45-year-old added, “It’s just a lot.”
So, would Kate and Danny, 38, ever just elope? “Maybe,” she told host Drew Barrymore and show correspondent Ross Mathews, though noting that signing the marriage certificate would still be “part of the dilemma.”
Still, that’s not to say Kate and Danny’s relationship has run cold. In fact, the Almost Famous actress said it’s quite the opposite.
“Sex isn’t supposed to be pretty,” she noted in a Feb. 25 interview with Bustle, “and I think that when you get older you kind of have more fun with that.”
Calling herself the “biggest flirt on the planet,” Kate—who is mom to daughter Rani, 6, with Danny, as well as shares son Ryder, 21, with Chris and son Bingham, 13, with Matt—believes she’s found “the right guy” in her fiancé because he understands her unconventional approach to love.
“I think anybody who’s ever been with me is very aware that I flirt with everybody—girls, boys,” she added. “He can handle this.”
