Why Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chavez Were Cut From I Know What You Did Last Summer

Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chaves are marked safe from The Fisherman.

Though it was previously reported that the duo was set to appear in the upcoming horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has since shared that their roles were ultimately cut from the final project.

“In every movie, it’s best laid plans, and then you edit the movie and you put it together and you go, ‘I love this in a vacuum,’” she told People in an interview published July 15. “’This is a fantastic scene. But it doesn’t fit in the movie.’”

But while the Summer I Turned Pretty actress, 22, and the Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story actor, 25, won’t be spending their summer running from meat hooks in Southport, North Carolina, Robinson is leaving the door open for future collaborations.

“It was just one of those situations where it had nothing to do with Lola and Nicholas—they are both so fantastic,” she continued. “I really would love to work with them again. I loved working with them. They did a fabulous job.”

Secrets About I Know What You Did Last Summer

“It sucks because you don’t want to do that to those actors,” she added. “And it sucks when you love something as a scene but that scene just doesn’t work in the final cut of the film.”

As for who will be making it to the big screen? Along with a few new stars, including Madelyn Cline and Chase Sui Wonders, OG cast members like Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. will be reprising their roles from the 1997 film of the same name and its 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

“I was hesitant at first,” Hewitt recently told The Hollywood Reporter of her return to the franchise. “I wanted to make sure that she fit into the movie in the right way and that there was a reason for her to come back besides just the ‘90s nostalgia moment.”

“I wanted her part in the movie to matter and for the audience to feel like they were proud of who she has become,” she continued. “I will say that in thinking about it and watching the other movies before filming this new one, [the ending] makes sense.”

For his part, Freddie—who attended the film’s July 14 premiere with wife Sarah Michelle Gellar—shared that reuniting with his costar on set felt incredibly nostalgic.

“Whatever a high school union feels like, that’s what it felt like,” he told People earlier this month. “I’m really proud of the work that Love and I got to do on screen. I think it’s the best work we’ve done in all three of the movies that we did together.”
