Julia Roberts might be making a return to one of her biggest hits.
Amid speculation that a sequel to her and Cameron Diaz‘s 1997 film My Best Friend’s Wedding is in the works, Julia added fuel to the fire.
As the actress, who portrayed Julianne Potter in the movie, confirmed to Variety in an interview published Sept. 18, “They’re talking to me.”
In fact, Julia’s After the Hunt collaborator Luca Guadagnino has volunteered to direct the film, telling the outlet he’d take the job “in a second.”
More details have not been confirmed at this time.
Since hitting theaters in June 1997, the original film—which also starred Dermot Mulroney—has become a fan favorite, though it almost never made it to the big screen.
And while initial interest was low, it was there, as he added, “The script went out to 50-something people…we had two offers.”
However, Julia’s star power was a key aspect of the film. As Ron put it, “People say, how could it ever be another actress besides Julia Roberts?”
Though it almost was another actress: Sandra Bullock, to be exact.
“The only person the other offer was for, and I’m not sure if she even knew about it,” he shared. “She’s probably the only other actress in the world besides Julia who would have been fabulous for that role. They’re the two best people in the world to do that, but that’s how lucky I was.”
The film was also ahead of its time in bringing an LGBTQ character—Rupert Everett‘s George Downes—to the big screen .
“On top of Julianne losing the guy, I wanted to write something where the smartest, best, wisest, most terrific person in the movie was gay,” he shared. “There wasn’t anything like that in those days; this was the first time that ever really happened.”
