‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff ‘Y: Marshals’ Returns Luke Grimes as a Tortured Kayce Dutton in First Look

Kayce Dutton’s fresh start at the end of Yellowstone may have been short lived.

The new extended trailer for the Yellowstone spinoff series centered around the prodigal Dutton son, called Y: Marshals, shows Kayce once again struggling with being a good man who does bad things.

“I fought every day to get out from under the weight of the Yellowstone,” he says at the start of the first footage released from the highly anticipated CBS series (below). “I’ve lost my teammates, my parents and my brothers. … I’m trying to find a new beginning.”

Kayce is now leading a team of U.S. Marshals in Montana, with his grown son Tate (Brecken Merrill) suited up by his side, after he sold his family’s Montana ranch and planned to stake out a new beginning for his family following the events of the season 5B finale of Yellowstone, which concluded the flagship series from Paramount Network.

Y: Marshals is one of several spinoffs continuing on Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone franchise.

While the cast includes Yellowstone stars Merrill, Gil Birmingham and actor/consultant Mo Brings Plenty reprising their roles, notably missing from the cast list is Kelsey Asbille, who played Kayce Dutton’s wife Monica. Whether that ushers in new tragedy for Kayce remains to be seen.

Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos and Tatanka Means are new castmembers.

Here’s the official logline: “With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana. Kayce and his teammates — Pete Calvin (Marshall-Green), Belle Skinner (Kebbel), Andrea Cruz (Santos) and Miles Kittle (Means) — must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence with their duty to their families, which for Kayce includes his son Tate (Merrill) and his confidantes Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) from the Broken Rock reservation.”

Y: Marshals premieres Sunday, March 1 at 8 p.m. on CBS, streaming on Paramount+ live and on-demand for Paramount+ Premium subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the next day.
